Η Μάχη του Μαραθώνα (1824)

 

Πολεμική αναμέτρηση μεταξύ των 3.000 Οθωμανών Τούρκων του Ομέρ Πασά και 600 Ελλήνων υπό τον Γιάννη Γκούρα, στην πεδιάδα του Μαραθώνα, εκεί όπου ο Μιλτιάδης είχε νικήσει τον στρατό των Περσών το 490 π.Χ. Η δεύτερη μάχη του Μαραθώνα έγινε στις 5 Ιουλίου 1824 και έληξε, όπως και η πρώτη, με επικράτηση των ελληνικών όπλων.

Τον Ιούνιο του 1824 ο πασάς της Καρύστου Ομέρ έλαβε εντολή να στραφεί κατά της Αττικής, σε μια εποχή που οι Έλληνες σπαράζονταν από εμφύλιες έριδες. Την ίδια περίοδο (24 Ιουνίου 1824), ο πρόεδρος του Εκτελεστικού, Γεώργιος Κουντουριώτης, όρισε φρούραρχο της Ακρόπολης τον δυναμικό οπλαρχηγό Γιάννη Γκούρα.
