8 A handout photo made available by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) shows a RAF Typhoon aircraft sitting at RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus, 12 January 2024. Four RAF Typhoons launched from RAF Akrotiri on 11 January to conduct strikes against military targets in Yemen. Houthi rebels have been targeting merchant vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden with missiles and drones. According to the Royal Air Force, Houthi attacks in the Red Sea greatly increased between November and December, causing major shipping companies to cease sailing in the region and insurance costs to rise ten-fold since early December. FGR4 Typhoons returned to RAF Akrotiri after conducting precision strikes against two Houthi military targets, Bani in north-western Yemen and an airfield at Abbs, according to the Royal Airforce.
