Οι επιστήμονες εικάζουν ότι το αντικείμενο μπορεί να είναι η τσιμεντένια άγκυρα της συσκευής που πιθανολογείται ότι θα περιελάμβανε και πλέγμα από ανοξείδωτο ατσάλι. Αποστολή της συσκευής, σύμφωνα με τον αξιωματικό του Σουηδικού Ναυτικού και ειδικό της πολεμικής ιστορίας Anders Autellus, πιθανότατα ήταν να προκαλεί παρεμβολές στα σόναρ των υποβρυχίων.
Το πλέγμα μπορεί να έχει διαβρωθεί με την πάροδο των δεκαετιών, ωστόσο οι εικόνες του αντικειμένου που δημιουργήθηκαν από την ερευνητική ομάδα Ocean X δείχνουν κάτι που μοιάζει με τρύπες, όπου πιθανολογείται ότι συνδεόταν η συσκευή με το αγκυροβόλιο.
Ο Stefan Hogeborn, μέλος της ομάδας συμφωνεί, υποστηρίζοντας ότι το εύρημά τους βρίσκεται ακριβώς κάτω από μια σημαντική θαλάσσια οδό. Γερμανικά πλοία που μετέφεραν προμήθειες ζωτικής σημασίας για τον πόλεμο γίνονταν στόχος σοβιετικών υποβρυχίων που ξεγλιστρούσαν στη Βαλτική θάλασσα από τον κόλπο της Φινλανδίας.
Εάν τελικά η θεωρία ευσταθεί, το βυθισμένο αντικείμενο μπορεί να είναι ένα σημαντικό ιστορικό εύρημα. Ωστόσο υπάρχει και μια απόδειξη περί του αντιθέτου. Το αντικείμενο μήκους 60 μέτρων που μελετήθηκε από την ομάδα Ocean X είναι πολύ μεγαλύτερο από τα αγκυροβόλια που χρησιμοποιούσαν οι Γερμανοί και άλλα αντιμαχόμενα κράτη κατά τη διάρκεια του 2ου παγκοσμίου πολέμου υποστηρίζει ο Peter Lindberg, ένα άλλο μέλος της ομάδας, πιστεύοντας ότι πρόκειται για φυσικό σχηματισμό.
Το UFO της Βαλτικής ανακαλύφθηκε το Μάιο του 2011 μέσω απεικονίσεων σόναρ. Το ασυνήθιστο σχήμα του προκάλεσε ποικίλες εικασίες, με κάποιους να το συγκρίνουν με Millennium Falcon, διαστημόπλοιο από τη γνωστή σειρά ταινιών Star Wars.
Οι σκεπτικιστές υποστηρίζουν ότι οι περίεργες εικόνες μπορεί να είναι αποτέλεσμα κακών ρυθμίσεων του σόναρ και από τους περιορισμούς στην τεχνολογίας της απεικόνισης του βυθού.
Η ομάδα Ocean X, που είναι επαγγελματίες κυνηγοί ναυαγίων, επέστρεψαν στην περιοχή των ερευνών με καλύτερο και πιο εξελιγμένο εξοπλισμό που εξασφάλισαν με χρηματοδότηση από χορηγό που επιλέγει να διατηρεί την ανωνυμία του. Ελπίζουν, μάλιστα, το αντικείμενο να γίνει δημοφιλής τουριστική ατραξιόν, όταν έλθει στη επιφάνεια.

‘Baltic UFO’ may be secret Nazi sub-trap

The mysterious disc-shaped object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea could be a relic from a giant World War II device placed there by the Nazis to disrupt Soviet submarine navigation.
The object may be the concrete anchor of the device, which also had to be fitted with stainless steel mesh, Swedish naval officer and warfare history expert Anders Autellus told Swedish newspaper Expressen. It would interfere with submarine radar signals and make them crash.
The mesh itself may well have eroded away over the decades, but the images of the object made by the Ocean X team exploring it show what appear to be holes, where it was attached to the foundation, he added.
Stefan Hogeborn, a member of the team, concurs, saying their find is located just under an important shipping route. German vessels carried many goods important for the war effort during the war, and Soviet submarines sneaking from the Gulf of Finland into the Baltic Sea targeted them.
If the theory is true, the trap may be an important historical find, but there is evidence against it too. The 60-meter object studied by Ocean X is way larger than what Germans and some other warring nations deployed during the World War II. Peter Lindberg, another member of the team, says he still believes the object is a natural formation.
The “Baltic UFO” was discovered in May last year through sonar imaging technology. Its unusual shape provoked a good deal of speculation, with some people comparing it to the Millennium Falcon ship from the movie Star Wars. Skeptics say the peculiar images may have resulted from improper adjustment of the sonar and the limitations of the technology.
Ocean X, professional wreck-hunters, have returned to the site with better and more sophisticated equipment after receiving funding from an undisclosed sponsor. They hope the object may become a popular tourist attraction once unearthed.
