Mansplaining είναι ένας αγγλικός νεολογισμός που προέκυψε ως συνδυασμός των λέξεων man (άνδρας) & explaining (εξήγηση) και έχει υποτιμητική σημασία.[1] Ορίζεται ως "η πράξη του να εξηγεί κάποιος κάτι σε κάποιον, συνήθως ένας άνδρας σε μία γυναίκα, με τρόπο περιφρονητικό, κηδεμονικό ή πατροναριστικό".[2][3] Η Λίλι Ρόθμαν (Lily Rothman) του αμερικανικού περιοδικού The Atlantic ορίζει το mansplaining ως "το να εξηγεί κάποιος, χωρίς επίγνωση του γεγονότος ότι ο δέκτης της εξήγησης γνωρίζει περισσότερα από τον εξηγητή, ο οποίος συχνά συμβαίνει να είναι άνδρας απευθυνόμενος σε γυναίκα". Η συγγραφέας και δοκιμιογράφος Ρεμπέκα Σόλνιτ (Rebecca Solnit) αποδίδει το φαινόμενο σε ένα συνδυασμό "υπέρμετρης αυτοπεποίθησης και αμάθειας".[4]
